Curatorial Leadership in Collections (CLiC)

Scottish Contemporary Art Network
2018-21

I have participated in two phases of (CLiC), an action research and advocacy project on cultural leadership, specifically exploring curating in collections and museums resources.  The project has involved curators and directors from collecting institutions across the Scottish sector, including key independent, university, local authority and national collections and meetings and visits with UK national and international colleagues.  CLiC has strengthened leadership roles in public collections for contemporary audiences, and in building public, commercial and philanthropic partnerships.

Phase 1 took place over 18 months from 2018, eight museum partners engaged in curatorial research visits, advocacy forums, leadership training and workshops.  We were supported to work individually and collectively to advocate for the role of collections, develop a vision for enhanced future investment and initiate and deepen partnerships. We made connections with over 70 senior professionals and policy makers who participated in exchanges, panel discussion and development visits.

Phase 2 supported an expanded network of contemporary art curators from collections across Scotland and generated learning and resources with and for the wider museums sector. The CLiC Connect and Activate Programme in 2020-2021 developed best practice working with contemporary artists. Encompassing the first year of Covid the showcased work (including work I was involved with at GWL where we hosted a residency by Ingrid Pollard) aimed to support leaders to think about how collections can be both resilient and relevant in challenging times.
